Happy Belated Birthdays to [info]superplin and [info]speakr2customrs, and thanks to everyone who sent or posted birthday wishes. I had a good day, a surprising amount of it spent on the phone receiving birthday wishes, including being sung to by what sounded like an entire dormitory of college students.[info]keswindhover and [info]elinora wrote me wonderful Decadance fic, and [info]gobi_rex sent me chocolate. I'll try to thank everyone properly tomorrow.

Subject: 31 random thoughts upon turning 31
Security: Public

1. As i was telling my dearest <lj user=kantayra> a few minutes after midnight, being 31 doesn't feel any different from 30. And 30 didn't feel all that different from 18. I keep waiting for the day when I'll feel 'grown up', and it's still not there.

2. Hubby baked me pancakes this morning. And he's supposed to bake me a marble cake later.

3. Just released a new story today, called Blurred Nights. If you remember my Blurred Bloodlines/Memories fanfics, this story and the two that will follow are loosely based on these. I've got sample chapters on my writing website if you want a peek.

4. First birthday in my new home. W00t!

5. Gay ninjas are frighteningly addictive.

6. My loot this year... Got an eliptical trainer machine from hubby - although i've had it for 2 months now. Got a coral bracelet from my brother - although it was just a random gift i happened to receive yesterday. Got a shirt from my parents - although it's stuck somewhere in the mail. And i'll buy myself a watch band sometime today as i've been watchless for a week and i hate not having a watch.

7. I will send good vibes toward <lj user=darsynia> but i will not bug her.

8. <lj user=riccadonna> made me a birthday drawing! It's got Spike in it! *loves*

9. On my current tv-watching list, in no particular order - Heroes, House, Primeval, the Sarah Connor's chronicles, Supernatural, Project Runway, Pushing Daisies, Naruto.

10. I lied. I'm too boring to find 31 things to say.

Shock and horror! The Doctor with no Master! What is wrong with me tonight? Actually, I think my mind came up with this as penance for what I am about to do to Nine in another fic I've just about finished. I love Nine. Honestly, I do. Of all the Doctors ever, he'd be the one I believe would be able to spare a thought for those he's left behind. Well, for Susan, anyway.

I am not a Doctor/Rose shipper. I loved Nine's relationship with Rose, but I saw nothing romantic or sexual about it. Ever. It would have just been wrong. No, they had a more parent-child relationship. Nine learned to care about Rose much as father learns to love his children, and Rose matured with the parental nurturing Nine gave her as that love grew. To my way of thinking, Rose could have continued to grow into a strong, independent, warm, caring and wonderful person if only Nine hadn't regenerated. Ten's pretty, but he's no Dad (except for the spreading the genes into the next generation part of being a dad --- e.g. Jenny).

But enough with the sharing of my thoughts and excuses. On to the ficlet. The title was inspired by U2's "Mysterious Ways", by the way. Read more... )

Subject: Sarah Palin Debate Flowchart

Politicians evade answering questions all the time. But I think that was the first time I heard a politician announce she was going talk about any subject she wanted, regardless of the question asked. Did the rules prohibit Gwen Ifill from telling Palin that's not how a debate works?

And index cards? Do we really have a less rigorous test for someone who may be running the country than we do for college entrance exams?

And before anyone says, "But Obama.." it's not about experience, it's about knowledge. I don't think she proved she knows this stuff.

Oh, and "Bosniaks" is a word, and it was the right word in the circumstances. It's not a slur, either. So says Mr. M, who knows the area well. So that's one "flub" Joey didn't commit. The man seems to know every neighborhood in Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan intimately.

The .org status page isn't reporting any problems, but I can't reach the site.

ETA: One hour later, LJ seems to be back now. I wonder if the downtime had to do with the hackers they'd been having trouble with earlier this week. ETA2: And in the time it took me to post this update the site went down again.

ETA3: 1h15m after I originally posted this entry, LJ is back up and I've just filed a support request to ask them what happened.

Subject: Supreme Court case meme!
Security: Public

Meme snatched from [info]liz_marcs:

In an upcoming interview with Katie Couric to be aired this week, Sarah Palin is unable to name any Supreme Court Case other than Roe v. Wade. (ETA by Miss M: It was any case that she disagreed with, but still. She couldn't think of Dred Scott? And she - or her staff - issued a press release disagreeing with a recent decision.)

The Rules: Post info about ONE Supreme Court decision, modern or historic, to your lj. (Any decision, as long as it's not Roe v. Wade.) FListers, please take the meme to your ElJay to spread the fun.

Note to Non-U.S. Peeps: It should be noted that, in fairness to the American electorate, most Americans can name more than one U.S. Supreme Court case off the top of their heads. So, the fact that Palin can only name one is simply appalling.

I first discovered mine on a Supreme Court trivia hunt created by a more than usually sadistic law prof.

Nix v Hedden

[A] case in which the United States Supreme Court addressed whether a tomato was classified as a fruit or a vegetable under the Tariff Act of March 3, 1883.... Botanically a tomato is a fruit. The court, however, unanimously ruled in favor of the defendant, that the Tariff Act used the ordinary meaning of the words "fruit" and "vegetable"—where a tomato is classified as a vegetable—not the technical botanical meaning.

That's right guys, the Supreme Court declared the tomato a vegetable. I wonder how what Cordelia would have done with this info for her science project in Some Assembly Required?

Subject: Economy stuff

As a circus, this is interesting. Otherwise, it's appalling. I've been following it, but not posting much because I've been sick and it's all I could do to sort of keep up with work. Rather than try to summarize what I've thought and felt over the past few days, here are a few links to people who actually know what they're talking about.

Paul Krugman Not long ago, other market-watchers were mocking him as a prophet of doom who hated seeing anything good in the market. That's a pretty good indicator that he's worth listening to now.

Calculated Risk This blog has lots of info about the mortgage crisis and the bailout, or whatever it's being called now. There's also a video on the front page of someone painting grass green and a company that "trashes out" homes full of stuff so they can be empty and supposedly ready-to-sell. (The personal belongings I understand, but does the concept of selling a furnished home not exist in California?) If, like me, you live in a place mostly unaffected by foreclosures, this will make you blink.

Eschaton I read Atrios for the snark and the links. (This link has nothing to do with the economy, but I wouldn't have missed it. And, of course, these people are on LJ. There is no sub-sub-sub culture not represented here.) Ask me if you need an explanation for the ponies.

What happens now?

Biggest WTF: “It really is a financial tsunami, and it could go either way,” said the multimillionaire telecommunications mogul who ran for the U.S. Senate in 2006. “It took Japan 20 years to recover from their buying binge. How long does it take us to work through excessive leverage? That could take years not months. This is our Katrina.” from a Wall Street Journal article about the tragic effect the economic downturn could have on Greenwich, CT. Another WTF line: "There also is the human cost to the financial floods, the collective psychological breakdown that occurs when Greenwich’s billionaires become mere millionaires."

Worst metaphor, which also provided unneeded proof that Rep. Issa isn't the smartest guy on earth. He said that voting for the bailout "would be like placing 'a coffin on top of Ronald Reagan’s coffin.'"

As insurance woes go, this is a small thing, but it's been going on since April. How freaking hard is it to believe that a family's insurance is carried through the wife's job, not the husband's? Why does a hospital insist on reversing the names so the insurance company denies it over and over on the grounds that my husband is not covered for pap smears?

I had intended, at one point, to put my fic on this journal. Like so many other plans, that completely fell by the wayside. To be fair, I started having trouble getting on to insanejournal, and then I just sort of stopped trying. Just popped over here to see if access was easy again. Might as well start posting at least some of the things I've written over here as per the original plan.

This one was written this past Summer and posted on my LJ fic journal on August 7, 2008. It is my first (finished, anyway) mix-and-match Doctor/Master fic.

Title: For a Little While

Beta: My thanks go out to the lovely and talented [info]x_los. She helped whip this puppy into shape (although I was unable to do justice to all her comments), helped me come to grips with the fact that not everyone shares my feelings about dwarfs, and was good enough to point out where I had the poor Doctor and Master ---- and the point I was trying to make --- drowning in a sea of ejaculate.
